A report on possible abuse of office by a Dutch mayor in a Bulgarian holiday home affair was to be made public on January 9 2010, the Maastricht municipal press office said.

Maastricht mayor Gerd Leers was accused of abusing his position as mayor in a conflict concerning the construction of his privately owned holiday villa in Bulgaria.

The investigation by the Bureau Integrity Dutch Municipalities (BIDM) had been started after the affair went public in October 2009. According to a publication in Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad, Leers had sent a letter to the Bulgarian ambassador to The Netherlands about his conflict with the Bulgarian construction company, responsible for the construction of his villa. Leers allegedly signed the letter as "Gerd Leers, mayor of Maastricht."

The BIDM report was to be discussed on the evening of January 11 in the municipal General Affairs committee, where investigators were to answer questions from members of the committee, Dutch daily De Telegraaf said on January 6.

The municipal council would then discuss the report on January 13.

Leers has said he hoped the investigation would clear his name.
